Preparation
Students need to come to class with the necessary schools supplies. Students will be provided with a list of supplies required for each class (typically they include a pen/pencil, a 2 pocket folder, and a notebook). Students will have until the end of the first week of school to bring in the required materials.
Participation
Part of students’ grades will be based on appropriate class participation. There will be assignments in which the only grade a student is earning is the participation grade (e.g. reading a novel in class, viewing a film, or class discussion). Up to 5% of a student’s grade may be based on participation, and the total amount is up to the discretion of the classroom teacher.
Homework
Completing homework is mandatory at Niles Central. Student and homework is graded and factored into a student’s overall grade. Homework may be independent assignments or extensions of assignments worked on in class.
Late/Make-Up Work
Make-up work will be accepted for full credit if a student missed an assignment due to an excused absence. The day a student returns to school, it is the student’s responsibility to ask for the work he/she missed. The student will have the number of days he/she was absent to complete the work (i.e. if a student is absent 1 day, he/she has 1 day to complete the make-up work), unless discussed and agreed upon with the student’s classroom teacher. If the student has an unexcused absence in a class, he/she will have the opportunity to receive no less than 50% credit for a make-up assignment, if the student has put in a “good faith effort” to complete the assignment. A student’s classroom teacher can give more than 50% per their discretion. Again, it is the student’s responsibility to ask for the work on the day he/she returns to school. If a student does not make any attempt to complete their missing work, whether excused or unexcused, or does not make a “good faith effort” to complete the work, they will be issued no credit for the assignment. Case managers will continue to help facilitate ongoing conversations between students and instructors regarding all instructional activities.
Out of School Suspension
Students are given the opportunity to complete 100% of any assigned work or tests. If the work involves classroom participation where the student must be present, he/she will not have the opportunity to complete the missed work. If the student was not already given the work to complete during the suspension, he/she will have the same number of days as he/she was suspended to complete any work that was missed.
Extra Credit
All students are encouraged to complete extra credit assignments; however, students are only eligible to earn extra credit if all of the required assignments are complete. If a student has an unexcused absence, he/she must make up the work for partial classroom credit before being given the opportunity to complete extra credit work. If a student has an idea regarding an extra credit assignment, he/she should speak to the teacher for approval before completing the assignment. Remember, extra credit assignments must be related to the subject area of the class.
